Planisphaerium Coeleste — Johann Baptist Homann, c. 1730

This magnificent celestial map, Planisphaerium Coeleste, was created by the renowned German cartographer Johann Baptist Homann in the early 18th century. A masterpiece of both artistry and scientific illustration, the chart presents two richly decorated hemispheres depicting the constellations of the northern and southern skies.

Each constellation is vividly hand-colored and adorned with mythological figures drawn from classical antiquity—lions, serpents, heroes, and gods—illustrating the heavens as they were imagined in the Baroque era. Surrounding the celestial spheres are intricate astronomical diagrams: representations of planetary orbits, lunar phases, and the Ptolemaic and Copernican systems of the cosmos.

At the top, celestial deities preside over the heavens, symbolizing divine order and the majesty of creation. Homann’s Planisphaerium Coeleste combines scientific precision with artistic grandeur, reflecting the Enlightenment’s fascination with both knowledge and beauty.
